James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, known as the Winter Soldier, is a character featured prominently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Initially introduced as Steve Rogers' (Captain America's) childhood friend in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Bucky was presumed dead after falling from a train during a mission in World War II.
However, it was later revealed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) that Bucky survived and was captured and brainwashed by Hydra. He was then subjected to experimentation, which included the enhancement of his physical abilities and the replacement of his lost arm with a cybernetic one.
As the Winter Soldier, Bucky became a highly skilled assassin utilized by Hydra for decades. His memory was repeatedly wiped between missions, making him unaware of his true identity or past.
Following the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky slowly began to regain his memories and struggled to reconcile his past actions with his desire for redemption. He played a role in subsequent MCU films, including Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), as well as the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021).
